Anodeflex

AnodeFlex cables have been used successfully to extend the effective lives of pipeline coating systems. AnodeFlex systems provide a cost-effective alternative to recoating, while staying in compliance with CP regulations. Because it is quicker and far less costly to install an AnodeFlex system than to recoat, more miles of pipeline may be brought back into compliance with AnodeFlex technology.

The AnodeFlex system has 5 basic elements:

1. A copper conductor, which serves as a low-resistance buss bar that delivers the required current over considerable distance without substantial longitudinal voltage drop.

2. Special conductive polymer that seals the conductor from chemical attack, yet allows current to flow from the conductor to the environment all along its length.

3. High-performance coke breeze, which serves as the active matrix for the anodic reactions.

4. A fabric jacket that holds the coke breeze in place amount the anode cable. This jacket is designed to resist electrochemical attack, yet allows current from the anode to flow to the surrounding soil.

5. A tough, porous, nonconductive braided jacket, which enhances resistance to abrasion and prevents the fabric from being damaged.

AnodeFlex technology offers a unique and cost-effective way to keep the operation of a pipeline in compliance with cathodic protection DOT or other regulations. The use of AnodeFlex products on pipelines eliminates many of the problems of conventional groundbed anodes.

· Equalizes cathodic protection at consistent levels all along the line.

· Its low overall current output stops further coating degradation, caused by cathodic disbanding when higher current output anodes are used.

· Interference problems are greatly reduced, because an AnodeFlex system is installed adjacent to the pipeline and emits low current output per foot.

· In most cases, AnodeFlex products can be installed in the pipeline ROW. Environmental and other ROW-related problems are therefore kept to a minimum.

Active Corrosion Protection

Cathodically protecting buried metal structures such as pipelines and tanks, and prolonging the life of above-ground storage tank bottoms, are the two primary applications for AnodeFlex 1500-01 continuous impressed current anode.

AnodeFlex 1500-01

AnodeFlex 1500-01 is flexible, continuous, carbon-based anode. During manufacture, conductive polymer is extruded onto a 6-gauge copper conductor. The polymer seals the copper conductor from chemical attack, yet allows current flow from the copper to the environment along the entire length of the anode. The anode cable is centered in a porous woven jacket, which is filled with high performance coke breeze. The woven jacket is then overbraided with polymeric filament, adding strength and compacting the jacket around the anode.

When energized the conductive polymer anode provides current to the coke breeze. Electrochemical reactions occur within the coke breeze, sustaining current flow to the target structure.

An Alternative to Pipeline Recoating

AnodeFlex cables have been used successfully by some of the world's largest pipeline operators since 1985, to extend the effective lives of their pipeline coating systems. AnodeFlex provides the pipeline owner a cost-effective option to recoating, while staying in compliance with CP regulations. Because it is quicker and far less costly install Anodeflex than to recoat, more miles of pipeline may be brought back in to compliance using Anodeflex, given a fixed maintenance or rehabilitation budget.

The Correct Amount of Current and No More

Conventional groundbeds have performed very well on pipelines with effective coatings. However, as coatings deteriorate the effective protection distance of these discrete anodes rapidly decrease, and on poorly coated pipelines the effective protection distance can be as wide as 100 m. Most current under such circumstances is directed to the part of the pipe nearest the groundbed-resulting over-protection and subsequent accelerated localized coating disbandment, whilst under-protection exists just a few meters further along the pipeline.

Anodeflex being a continuous anode, all the way long the pipeline, is able to supply current exactly where it's needed-no more and no less. It is therefore an ideal coating rehabilitation method which can be installed at a fraction of the cost of recoating, and allows for the pipeline to remain in full operation.

Ease of Installation

Anodeflex 1500-01 is a complete anode. Delivered on reels of approximately 500 m. Anodeflex 1500-01 can be plowed in or simply laid in an existing ditch. Because the anode is pre-packaged with its own calcined coke breeze backfill, it is also ideal for installation by directional drilling. This feature is particularly attractive in congested, urban areas- as well as when the anode must be installed under a river bed, or in an environmentally sensitive area.

Also for Tank Bottoms

Whether installed beneath a new AST during construction, or placed in the interstitial layer between old and new bottoms. Anodeflex 1500-01 provides evenly distributed CP current without overprotecting. For tanks, may be plowed in around the tank perimeter.

AnodeFlex 3000

A long-line flexible anode for high output impressed-current cathodic protection of buried pipelines and for on-grade and buried storage tanks.

Construction: 5 basic elements:

· Central Copper Bus Cable: #6 or #8 AWG Halar insulated, serving as a low resistance buss bar to deliver the required current over considerable distance without incurring substantial longitudinal voltage drop. Halar insulation seals the conductor from chemical attack.

· Copper -Cored, Mixed Metal Oxide Anode (MMO): provides low attentuation for reduced splicing, in combination with prepackaged coke breeze, offers a low resistance groundbed designed for a minimum life of 40 years.

· Coke Breeze: Pre-packaged, high performance calcined petroleum coke breeze, serving as the active matrix in which the electrochemical reactions take place. Designed for min. 20 years’ service life at maximum current output of 656 mA/m (200 mA/ft.)

· Fabric Jacket: Integrated woven acid resistant and porous jacket holding the coke breeze in place around the anode.

· Protective Braid: Tough, porous, non-conductive protective braid enhancing the abrasion and damage resistance of the jacket.

AnodeFlex 3000 is a long-life, flexible, wire anode, which can be placed remote to the target structure. Greater current output can be achieved on applications where close proximity anode groundbeds do not work. Key to the product's performance is the central, copper-core mixed metal oxide anode. The anode is powered by a #6 or #8 AWG copper cable insulated with an inner layer of halar and outer layer of high molecular weight polyethylene. The unique construction of the anode and copper cable allows high current output with protection against low pH and chlorine attack. AnodeFlex 3000 can be placed remote to the steel surface to be protected, thereby maintaining the steel-to-soil "instant-off" potential in the required window of -850 mV (-950 mV if SRB's present) and -1200 mV. The central MMO wire and cable surrounded by factory prepackaged, high-conductivity coke breeze, held in place by a porous, woven acid-resistant jacket. This arrangement avoids handling loose coke breeze and simplifies field installation. The improved current distribution increases anode efficiency and maintains a low resistance groundbed. On poorly coated pipelines where optimal polarization can no longer be achieved, AnodeFlex 3000 can often be installed as an alternative to expensive recoating. Both on single and multi-parallel pipelines, safe levels of polarization will be restored at every point. The system avoids difficult and costly field recoating and greatly reduces environmental disturbance.
